OHA recognizes four Hawaiian language immersion students at the State Science Fair

HONOLULU (April 12, 2017)  – The Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) today recognized four students whose Hawaiian language science projects qualified for this year’s state science fair, which is being held this week at the Hawaiʻi Convention Center. OHA begins posting board agendas in ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi

HONOLULU (Feb. 23, 2017) – The Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) posted its first board agenda in ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi and English, marking the beginning of a new pilot project to publish board agendas in both co-official languages of the state. “This represents our commitment to normalizing ‘ōlelo Hawaiʻi in our daily lives,” said OHA Chair Colette Y. OHA celebrates ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi month

By Treena Shapiro You may have noticed Ka Wai Ola’s cover looks different this month – more like a pre-statehood ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i nūpepa than OHA’s regular monthly offering. It’s OHA’s way of marking ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i month, as February was officially designated in 2012 to celebrate and encourage the use of the Hawaiian language. Included as part of OHA’s bill package, the legislation that gave ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i its own month requires “that all letterheads, documents, symbols and emblems of the State and other political subdivisions include accurate and appropriate Hawaiian names and words, including proper Hawaiian spelling and punctuation.” ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i…
