OHA statement on The Eddie Big Wave Invitational

OFFICE OF HAWAIIAN AFFAIRS STATEMENT ON THE EDDIE BIG WAVE INVITATIONAL

HONOLULU (Nov. 29, 2018) – The Office of Hawaiian Affairs is proud to join the Eddie Aikau Foundation and a coalition of other Hawaiian organizations to bring back The Eddie to celebrate the life and legacy of a legendary Hawaiian waterman in Eddie Aikau and to reclaim surfing as a Hawaiian cultural practice. OHA sees The Eddie, which is the most viewed surf contest in the world, as an opportunity to encourage more Native Hawaiians to participate in their national sport and to promote the history and traditional aspects of surfing to remind the world of its cultural heritage.

Viewers from Hawaiʻi and around the world are invited to tune in to the live stream of The Eddie Opening Ceremony scheduled on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. OHA is a proud sponsor of the live stream coverage sharing the Opening Ceremony rich in Hawaiian protocol and The Eddie Big Wave Invitational featuring Hawaiʻi’s national sport.
