Getting people on the ʻāina to grow our food sustainably and perpetuating Hawaiian culture is what Kākoʻo ʻŌiwi is all about. Their approach involves restoring the cultural connection between the land and our community. And itʻs working! Last year, Kākoʻo ʻŌiwi harvested 68,200 pounds of produce sustainably. As this OHA Grantee works to restore abundance to 405-acres in Heʻeia, Oʻahu, it is also cultivating relationships between people and the ʻāina.
Kākoʻo ʻŌiwi is just one of many community programs funded by OHA through our Grants Program that provide services that promote the well-being of our community. In fiscal year 2015, OHA awarded $10.3 million to statewide initiatives that meet the needs of Hawaiians and the community at large.
