OHA’s Advocacy Division is leading efforts to fulfill the organization’s vision to raise a beloved nation. Called “Hoʻoulu Lāhui Aloha,” this initiative is about determining whether Hawaiians want to create a Native Hawaiian Governing Entity to represent them. As the aboriginal indigenous people of Hawaiʻi, Native Hawaiians have the inherent authority to reorganize themselves into a governing entity (or political body) if they choose to do so. Such an entity would provide Native Hawaiians with greater control over their destiny as they take steps toward self-determination and self-sufficiency. But any effort to organize Hawaiians into a political body would depend on the Hawaiian electorate. It would not necessarily depend on the federal or state government passing a law.
