The Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) has started the strategic planning process to develop its Strategic Plan for 2020+ that will determine OHA’s focus for years to come. An important part of this process is engaging with our stakeholders. In May and June 2019, OHA held nine community focus groups to share about the strategic planning process and gather community input on their areas of greatest needs. An extensive statewide media campaign utilized radio, tv, print and social media advertising and interviews to encourage beneficiaries and partners to attend the community focus groups in person, or provide manaʻo via an online survey. The final community meeting was held on June 6, 2019, and the online survey closed on this date. We would like to mahalo the hundreds of people who took the time to provide manaʻo in person and online. All community feedback will be compiled and presented to the Board of Trustees to help determine the areas of focus for the Strategic Plan in 2020 and beyond.
Our Hawaiian ancestors understood that the well-being of our community rested upon the inter-relationship of how we conduct ourselves, steward the islands we call home, and fulfill the responsibility of caring for our families, all within both the physical and spiritual realms. They also understood that successfully maintaining lōkahi meant careful observation, knowledge gathering, and informed decision making to achieve pono. OHA is striving to embrace this time-tested wisdom through our strategic framework.
Strategic Plan Framework Long Description
The OHA Board of Trustees (BOT) have completed Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the Strategic Planning Process. In Phase I the BOT re-affirmed their commitment to OHA’s vision and mission. During Phase 2, the Board identified their strategic framework which recognized the foundation of Native Hawaiian communities as ʻĀina, Mo‘omeheu, and ʻOhana. Further identified were the following strategic directions: educational pathways, economic stability, quality housing, and health outcomes.
Beneficiaries and other community members now have an opportunity to provide input on topics the BOT should consider during Phase 3 of the process. Additionally, community input sessions will be held throughout the pae ʻāina.
