Conference to help smooth path to federal contracts

HONOLULU (Feb. 15, 2013) -- More than 200 veterans and other small business owners are expected to benefit in a big way from a conference in March meant to help them clear hurdles in the path to securing federal government contracts.

The 2013 Hawaiʻi Veterans and Small Business Forum & Expo has been scheduled for 8 a.m. Thursday, March 28, 2013, and is being organized by the Hawaiʻi Procurement Technical Assistance Center (HI-PTAC), whose mission is to help local small businesses compete for lucrative federal government contracts. OHA grants drawing strong demand across the state

HONOLULU (Feb. 7, 2013) – The Office of Hawaiian Affairs is reporting a strong demand for its grant money as non-profit organizations are increasingly tailoring marketable services to OHA priorities as a way to help them stay afloat and meet needs across the state.

OHA this year received 148 proposals from nonprofits that requested a combined total of $36 million in grant money meant to help keep their missions going as well as to ultimately improve conditions for Native Hawaiians. Read more about OHA grants drawing strong demand across the state

OHA focuses on help with preparing taxes

HONOLULU (Jan. 24, 2013) – The Office of Hawaiian Affairs will kick off Friday a new effort to raise awareness about the financial boost that certain tax credits provide low income workers as well as the impact of that extra cash on the local economy.

OHA is teaming up with the Hawaiʻi Alliance for Community-Based Economic Development, or HACBED for short, to offer free tax assistance through an IRS program that has the potential to help eligible families get back as much as $5,891 per household this tax season. OHA launches marketing campaign for health efforts

HONOLULU (Dec. 27, 2012) – The Office of Hawaiian Affairs has launched a major marketing campaign to promote a health initiative aimed at battling obesity, a cause that has become a top policy priority.

The campaign includes TV commercials that will air statewide for a month on KHON-2 and Hawaii News Now, starting Dec. 27.

In the weeks ahead, similar commercials will appear during previews at movie theaters across the state. Through the entire month of January, print versions of the commercials will target commuters who ride TheBus on Oahu. Read more about OHA launches marketing campaign for health efforts

Native Hawaiian Justice Task Force presents its report to the Hawaiʻi Legislature

HONOLULU (December 27, 2012) – The nine-member Native Hawaiian Justice Task Force today presented its findings and recommendations to the Hawaiʻi Legislature.

The 28-page report reflects the perspectives and insights of more than 159 people who participated in various community meetings across the state in July and August.

The meetings prompted the Task Force’s 49 findings and 38 recommendations for addressing longstanding concerns about the disproportionate number of Native Hawaiians who are in prison in Hawaiʻi and the U.S. mainland.
