2010 Prince Kūhiō Parade and festivities For a day of celebration of the life of Prince Kūhiō, take the ‘ohana to Kapi'olani Park on Saturday, March 27 from 1 to 4 p.m. and enjoy the Prince Kūhiō Ho‘olaule‘a. Leimomi Khan, president of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs, said she would love to share with the community all the exciting events planned to celebrate Prince Kūhiō. She will be on Nā 'Ōiwi 'Ōlino, People Seeking Wisdom, Hawaiian radio talk show Monday, March 22 at 8 a.m. Tune in and listen at AM 940 on O'ahu, on Maui at KNUI-AM 900 and on Hawai'i Island on KHLO-AM 850 in Hilo, KKON-AM 790 in Kona, and streamed live all over the world at am940hawaii.com. On Saturday, savor the free entertainment by Hawaiian musicians as you peruse the many booths featuring arts & crafts, exhibits by Hawaiian organizations and businesses, and 'onolicious local grinds. You're going to love it, and the family will thank you. Then at 4 p.m. kick back and take in the celebratory Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalaniana'ole Commemorative Parade for Ke Ali'i Maka'äinana – the Citizen Prince, who started the first Hawaiian Civic Club, and as a Delegate from the Territory of Hawai'i he lobbied the federal government for the passage of the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act, which passed into law the year before he departed this life. Another Hawaiian leader who works diligently for the betterment of Native Hawaiians and is a lifetime member of the Hawaiian Civic Club of Honolulu, Haunani Apoliona, Chairperson of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. will be the Grand Marshal of the Prince Kūhiō Parade this year. In honor of the Prince, the parade with its floral floats, music and regalia will include participants, such as the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, Hawaiian homestead associations, the City and County of Honolulu, Native Hawaiian Legal Corp., Royal Societies, Queen's Medical Center, hālau hula, marching units and many others. Presented by the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs, the parade starts at Saratoga Street in Waikïkï at 4 p.m. ending at Kapi'olani Park at about 6 p.m. The Prince Kūhiō Moonlight Concert will follow the parade from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Kapi'olani Bandstand featuring Ku'uipo Kumukahi, other local musical artists and award-winning hālau. |
