OHA awards $13.7 million
in grants in FY 2008-2009 Ka Wai Ola Loa staff The 2009 OHA Grants and Sponsorships Annual Report has been released, detailing the $13,686,447 in grants and sponsorships that the Office of Hawaiian Affairs has infused into the community for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2009. Of these grants, $5.5 million was given to support education, $4.9 million to health, human services and housing, $1.9 million to native rights, land and culture, $1.1 million to economic development, and $354,000 to Hawaiian governance initiatives. The projects funded range from providing bariatric surgery to uninsured morbidly obese Native Hawaiians at the Queen's Medical Center ($100,000), to teaching life skills to students with special needs at Kaua'i and Kapa'a High Schools ($6,109), to expanding the role of telemedicine in Native Hawaiian health on Hawai'i ($98,131).
