MELE 'AILANA / ISLAND MUSIC
15 years with Nanea Win tickets to their celebration concert! By T. Ilihia Gionson / Ka Wai Ola Loa It's hard to believe that it's been 15 years since Kuana Torres Kahele and Kēhau Tamure first blended their voices into the sweet harmony that is as ubiquitous in Hawaiian music today as the palapalai namesake of their group is in lei. Having gone through several permutations through the years, having joined forces with Wailau Ryder, Akoni, and Keao Costa in the past, the original duo is back and fabulous on their new release Nanea. With a good mix of classics and originals – Kuana and Kēhau composed four of the 16 tracks – Nanea is a tour de force of Hawaiian falsetto, a worthy centerpiece to a 15-year anniversary. The album invites us in with Aunty Lena Machado's upbeat Ho'oipo Hula, and keeps the tempo up with Kuana's original Aloha Nō Ka'ū. We also enjoy some seldom-recorded classics, like Joseph Kelly Kubota's Pua Lāsana, Waioleka, or Mary Kawena Pūku'i and Maddy Lam's Ha'aheo Kaimana Hila. On Nanea, the duo is joined by enough guest artists to fill a concert. And speaking of concerts, Nā Palapalai will be celebrating their 15th anniversary with a series of concerts around our pae'āina, beginning on November 5 at Honolulu's Hawai'i Theatre – more on that below. This album is a must-have addition to the music library of any Hawaiian music afficionado. Never mind the traditional crystal: Nanea is a beautiful 15th anniversary gift to Nā Palapalai's fans.
