Mākua range re-opening cause for conflict, military outreach

The U.S. Army is set to resume live-ammunition training in O'ahu's Mākua Valley under a plan that military officials say scales back operations and decreases the risk of hazardous impacts. The claim is being disputed by community opponents who vow to continue their legal challenge that resulted in a 2001 court ban on combat exercises in the valley pending a complete environmental examination of the 4,190-acre Wai'anae Coast site. - READ M8ORE >

Maui, Hawai'i paddlers stroke to victory in Hilo

On Saturday, Aug. 1, the 2009 Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association State Championship Regatta brought upward of 3,000 paddlers representing 57 canoe clubs from around the state to Hilo One, more commonly known today as Bayfront.

$2.13 million in support of Hawaiians

The Office of Hawaiian Affairs is proud to support initiatives to empower our Native Hawaiian beneficiaries. In this issue of Ka Wai Ola Loa, read about:

  • $2 million toward the restoration of Bishop Museum's Hawaiian Hall
  • $24,958 to help Ni'ihau residents overcome barriers to higher education
  • $10,000 to perpetuate authentic Hawaiian slack key music
  • $59,974 to perpetuate Hawaiian outrigger canoe racing
  • $29,100 to teach Hawaiian immersion students digital storytelling skills

All this adds up to $2.13 million in grants to our community. Add to that OHA's efforts to secure and preserve O'ahu's Waimea Valley, and advocacy to protect the rights of our Hawaiian musicians, and you see the impact of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs: empowering Hawaiians, strengthening Hawai'i.
